Stelton – a calm messenger of Danish design
Stelton’s story began in 1960, when former army comrades Stellan and Carton combined their names and founded a company that would go on to become one of Denmark’s most renowned design brands. The early years were not without their challenges: initial ventures into sports shoes and furniture failed to gain traction.
The turning point came when the duo learned of a small factory in North Zealand called Danish Stainless, which produced servingware in stainless steel. A collaboration with the factory’s owner, Jørgen Knudsen, proved decisive. The result was a stainless steel sauce bowl that quickly gained popularity not only in Denmark but also internationally, reaching as far as the United States.
A legacy of master designers
The true foundation of Stelton’s success was laid in 1964, when the company’s then managing director and designer Peter Holmblad began working with Denmark’s most celebrated architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen. The collaboration resulted in the Cylinda Line tableware collection, launched in 1967, which achieved instant international acclaim for its pared-back beauty and functionalist design.
The overwhelming success of the Cylinda Line quickly transformed Stelton into a major design company. Following Arne Jacobsen’s death in 1971, Stelton embarked on a fruitful collaboration with the young designer Erik Magnussen. His very first product was a sensation: the EM77 vacuum jug, introduced in 1977, remains Stelton’s best-selling item and an undisputed icon of Scandinavian design.
An expanding collection
Since the 2000s, Stelton has broadened its range with a particular focus on coffee and tea accessories, including the popular Emma collection and classic French press coffee makers. The assortment also includes barware, home decor, lighting, as well as vacuum bottles and travel mugs designed for life on the move.
Through collaborations with international designers and architects, Stelton has created numerous award-winning product families, recognised in prestigious competitions such as the Red Dot Awards, German Design Award and ID Design Award.
