Genelec speakers – a Finnish pioneer of truthful sound
Founded in 1978 by two young students, Ilpo Martikainen and Topi Partanen, Genelec was born out of a simple but demanding ambition: to reproduce sound as purely, accurately and reliably as possible. Deeply rooted in professional audio and monitoring loudspeakers for studios, radio and television production, the brand has always aimed to create speakers with exceptionally high output and extremely low distortion – speakers you can trust even in the most critical listening environments.
Alongside reference-level sound quality, Genelec loudspeakers are also recognised for their understated elegance and forward-looking design. Every speaker is still manufactured in Finland, at Genelec’s own factory in Iisalmi, ensuring uncompromising quality from start to finish.
From professional studios to everyday homes
Genelec loudspeakers are designed to reproduce sound exactly as it was intended to be heard – with no unnecessary colouring. Active technology, meticulous acoustic engineering and the patented Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) technology are all key elements behind the brand’s instantly recognisable sound.
While Genelec is best known for its studio monitors, the brand has successfully brought professional-grade sound within reach for home use as well. Compact yet powerful models are equally at home on workstations and in living rooms, and their timeless design language blends effortlessly into a wide range of interiors.
Precision sound meets considered design
Thoughtful design is an essential part of the whole: the speakers’ iconic curved aluminium enclosure is not merely a visual choice, but one that also enhances acoustic performance.
One of Finland’s most celebrated designers, Harri Koskinen, has designed several Genelec speaker models where technical excellence and a clear, architectural aesthetic go hand in hand. His signature can be seen in the compact dimensions, carefully balanced proportions and material choices that actively support acoustic performance. In 2009, Genelec won the main prize at the Fennia Prize design competition with the 5040A subwoofer designed by Harri Koskinen.
