Description

HAY’s W&S Boulder bookend is part of a collection by design duo Wang & Söderström, consisting of ceramic accessories and objects with distinctive, sculptural forms and fascinating textures. The Boulder bookend has a bumpy, irregular surface and a hole in the middle that give it a tactile character – they make you want to grab it to see what it actually feels like to hold.

With the collection, Wang & Söderström aim to blur the lines between the digital and the physical. The objects have first been created digitally, then 3D printed and, lastly, moulded in porcelain or stoneware. The shapes are intentionally curious: “We wanted to give the objects organic forms as if they’ve been part of a plant or animal but keep the alien unfamiliarity that comes from their digital roots. What makes them ordinary or what makes them strange depends on who is looking at them,” the designers have said.

Wang & Söderström

Wang & Söderström is a Copenhagen-based design duo consisting of Anny Wang and Tim Söderström. Wang (b. 1990) studied spatial and furniture design at the University of Gothenburg, while Söderström (b. 1988) studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. They founded Wang & Söderström in 2016.

In their work, the duo balances between the digital and physical dimensions, exploring the opportunities brought by technology in a way that maintains the human, sensual and approachable nature of the end result, whatever it may be. Their main tool is 3D modelling software, and that’s also what they start every project with, whether they are working on an object, an installation or something completely digital. Alternating between and blurring the lines of art and design, Wang & Söderström has collaborated with the likes of Iittala, Hay, Frama, Nike, Rimowa and Burberry, among others.
