Hanna Mäkelä Finnish Design Shop

HANNA MÄKELÄ WORKS as a buyer at Finnish Design Shop. She says she is looking forward to seasonal sales: ”If you would like to update your interior, sales are a great way to pick up some decor pieces. I do shop by impulse every now and then, but most of the time there’s a need for a certain item. I know what I like so usually I’m able to avoid bad purchases.”

From Finnish Design Shop’s summer sale, Hanna picked seven products for an imaginary summer cottage in the archipelago. ”All of them would also suit my home. I included some soft shapes that give flavor to a simple and graphic decor. Hopefully, someday, I can order these products for a cottage of my own!”

Marimekko Tiiliskivi

1. Marimekko’s Tiiliskivi duvet cover

“The classic, graphic print of the Tiiliskivi bedlinen stands up to time year after year and creates a fresh contrast with the wood surfaces of a cottage. Armi Ratia designed the print in 1952.”

Alessi Tibidabo

2. Alessi’s Tibidabo serving cutlery

“In the summertime, new potatoes, beets and local smoked fish are more than enough for lunch. Alessi’s Tibidabo serving cutlery and Marimekko's Oiva platter will finish off any table setting.”

Artemide nh1217

3. Artemide’s nh1217 lamp

“The small and versatile nh1217 light fixture is like a piece of jewellery that brings a great atmosphere into dark spaces. The sleek fixture manufactured by Artemide is easy to move around. It was designed by Neri&Hu, an interesting design duo whose works I’ve followed at various trade fairs.”

Stelton Peak Bonbonniere

4. Stelton’s Peak Bonbonniere

“I remember how as a child we went to my grandparents’ island cottage and the first thing we did was to check on the contents of the tin on the table. We always found sweets, usually Finnish “Kettukarkki” marmalade candies or pink Pectus. Stelton’s Peak Bonbonniere bowl could act as the same type of hiding place for my own children or future grandchildren.”

Marimekko Flower vase

5. Marimekko’s Flower vase

“The small Flower vase doesn’t need any accompaniment apart from a wildflower or a few pieces of straw from the beach. I especially like this olive green version, which works well with grey beach rocks and the black elements of the interior.”

Skandinavisk Øy

6. Skandinavisk’s Øy hand lotion

“You always need hand lotion! And especially at the cottage when you wash your dishes by hand and wash your hands in seawater. The Øy hand lotion has a beautiful scent of archipelago that lasts long on your skin. The pump bottle is both handy and beautiful.”

Skagerak Edge pot

7. Skagerak’s Edge flowerpots

“Although Skagerak's Edge flowerpots have received inspiration from the South in their design, they also fit seamlessly in the Nordic landscape. When you plant various types of flowers and green plants in the different colours and sizes of terracotta pots, you can achieve a care-free set-up for your yard or balcony.”
