Ritva Puotila

Ritva Puotila (b. 1935) is a Finnish textile designer and the artistic director of the Finnish design company Woodnotes. The company was founded by Ritva Puotila and his son Mikko Puotila in 1987 and all its products are made from paper yarn. Woodnotes is the first company in the world to use paper yarn in a contemporary way in functional textiles.

Woodnotes uses paper yarn not as a substitute for other materials but for its characteristics. Paper yarn is an authentic, natural material composed of an ecologically produced renewable resource: wood. Ritva Puotila is the designer of the innovative Woodnotes’ carpets such as Railway, Line and New York collections, also made from paper yarn and available in different colours. The material gives durability and strength to the carpets. Moreover carpets are both hygienic and safe because due to the density of the fibres, paper yarn collects neither dust nor dirt – making the carpets a perfect product also for allergic people. Ritva Puotila, together with Minna Ahokas, also designed the Cool cushion, a versatile cushion that can turn from seat to ottoman and can also be used as a table. Ritva Puotila has received many important awards worldwide for her products and for her career, including Kaj Franck Design Prize, Finland Prize, Good Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, Best Item Award and was also nominated Textile Artist of the Year 2001. Ritva Puotila’s works are present in the collections of the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Architecture and Design Collection of the MoMA.
