Arabia’s Marketta mug is decorated with a pattern designed by Esteri Tomula. Like many of the prolific Finnish designer’s decorations, Marketta, Finnish for “marguerite daisy”, is based on the natural world.

Some of Tomula’s innumerable pattern designs did not make it into production, particularly the many variations she often drew of the same idea – Marketta among them. However, the pattern was dug up from Arabia’s archives in 2021 and paired with a modern, clean-lined form. The blue-toned Marketta mug is easy to combine with the other designs of Arabia’s Beloved Patterns collection as well as any minimalist, unicolour dishware, should you prefer a more uniform look. The Marketta mug is made of dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer proof vitro porcelain – an extremely functional material perfect for everyday use.

Esteri Tomula

Esteri Tomula was a Finnish artist who worked for the design brand Arabia for almost 40 years. She graduated from University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1947, and began working as a decorator for Arabia the same year. Tomula was particularly known for abundantly decorated, expertly drawn designs often based on the natural world. During her long and productive career, Tomula designed many beloved decorations, including the ones adorning the Vegeta enamel pots by Finel and the Botanica wall plates by Arabia.
