Description

LYFA’s Divan 2 is a stunning pendant lamp designed by Simon P. Henningsen in 1962, consisting of overlapping brass trapezoids carefully assembled one by one. Although they definitely make the luminaire look quite impressive, the trapezoids’ function is not only aesthetic: they also filter the light in a way that makes it comfortable and glare-free. As a result, the Divan 2 pendant provides soft, indirect lighting.

The Divan 2 pendant is named after the eponymous restaurant in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, for which the lamp was originally designed in the 1960s. The original luminaire was made of stainless steel, whose polished surface reflected Tivoli's evening lighting to the delight of guests dining at the restaurant, but in 2020, LYFA launched the luminaire in an elegant brass version. The warm shimmer of brass gives the luminaire’s light a cosy, inviting glow and adds a sense of luxury to the design – yet without making it too ostentatious. The inside of the lamp is white to allow the light to be reflected as effectively as possible.

Simon P. Henningsen

Simon P. Henningsen (1920–1974) was a Danish architect and luminaire designer with design in his blood – his father was the legendary architect-designer, Poul Henningsen. Simon P. did collaborate extensively with his father, including in the design of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, and he succeeded his father as Tivoli's chief architect from 1948 onwards. During his career, Simon P. Henningsen designed many luminaires that often featured impressive and playful shapes, strong geometry, and various reflective surfaces.
