The Aalto stool, designed by Alvar Aalto, is one of the icons of furniture design. The three-legged stool, first introduced in 1933, was a sensation in the design world of its time: the execution of its bent L-leg was revolutionary and paved the way for modern Scandinavian design. The leg is still manufactured with the same technique, where the end of a piece of solid birch is sawed in the form of a fan, and thin sheets of plywood are glued in the gaps. This allows the leg to be bent in the desired angle by heating and steaming. The result is an extremely sturdy element that is easy to attach to the round seat.
The Aalto stool is a truly timeless design that comes in an array of colours and makes a great extra seat, side table and nightstand. What’s more, the stool can be stacked in a beautiful spiralling tower when not in use.
