Description

Sika-Design’s Belladonna sofa was designed by Italian architect and designer Franco Albini in 1951. The elegant sofa is woven of Manau and Tohiti rattan and it has a comfortable upholstered seat cushion. The lightweight structure of rattan adds an airy touch to any space, and thanks to the attractive backrest, Belladonna will find its place also in a central spot of the room. Belladonna is part of Sika-Design’s Icons collection that features rattan classics from some of the most talented designers of the 20th century.

Franco Albini

Franco Albini (1905–1977) was an Italian Neo-Rationalist architect and designer. He graduated from Politecnico di Milano in 1929 and began his career by working for the famous Italian architect Gio Ponti. Albini developed his own, distinctive style, where traditional Italian artisanship and raw, inexpensive materials combined with new forms of modern minimalism.

Albini’s best known designs were made of rattan, including the Belladonna sofa from 1951 and the chairs Margherita and Gala, that both belong to the permanent collection of New York’s MoMA. During his career Albini was awarded three times with the prestigious Italian design award Compasso d’Oro.
