Description

The Arctander chair by Paustian is an iconic piece of Nordic design from the 1940s. Named after its designer, Philip Arctander, the chair has over the years been known familiarly as the name 'Muslingestolen', mussel chair – a reference to the chair's shell-like appearance. The mussel chair was produced in limited numbers until 2016 when Paustian re-launched the design classic in collaboration with Philip Arctander's granddaughter Sofie.

The new Arctander chair remains faithful to Muslingestolen's original design language. The soft seat rests casually on rounded oak legs while the chair's back legs reach backwards, giving the chair a pleasant, even slightly playful look. The armrests crown the chair's relaxed appearance. Upholstered in luxurious sheepskin, the chair makes a beautiful resting place in the living room or corner of the bedroom but will also delight in public spaces. The Arctander armchairs are numbered, and the number can be found on the label under the seat of the chair.

Philip Arctander

Philip Arctander (1916-1944) was a Danish architect, best known for his Muslingestol chair. The classic chair, also known as the Mussel Chair, was originally created almost by chance: in 1944, Arctander and five other architects were asked to design furniture as part of a competition sponsored by the supplier and store NY FORM A/S. Arctander designed the Muslingestol armchair with beech legs and sheepskin, which was released in a limited edition. The chair eventually became so popular that Nordic suppliers such as Ikea and Vik & Blindheim began to produce their own versions of it. Arctander left furniture design at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, but the shell-shaped chair is still produced by the Danish company Paustian for the delight of all design lovers.
