Description

The PH 3/3 pendant from Louis Poulsen is part of Poul Henningsen's legendary lighting family that features an innovative three-shade system developed by Henningsen in the 1920s.

Available as a limited edition from 1 October through 31 December 2022, this PH 3/3 pendant lamp features a top shade made of untreated brass with a white inner surface. The two mouth-blown opal glass shades with a sandblasted inner surface form a sculptural lamp that provides a pleasant, glare-free light and brings timeless elegance to any space.

Like the top shade, also the lamp body is made of untreated brass, which gives the PH 3/3 pendant lamp a warm, sophisticated finish – and over time, the brass surface and its hairlines will develop a beautiful patina. Poul Henningsen’s initials are engraved on the socket house.

PH 3/3 is one of the lesser-known designs in the series, a so-called full-size lamp. These designs feature shades with a ratio of approximately 3:2:1, and therefore appear rounder than many other designs in the collection. The full-sized luminaires are particularly glare-free and therefore ideally placed high in a room.

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) was a famous Danish designer who studied at the Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark, from 1911 to 1914, and then at the Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914 to 1917. He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he became famous for.

He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine “NYT”. Poul Henningsen’s pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction – compared to man’s need for light remains the fondation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.
