Alken & Bengtsson

The designers behind the name Alken & Bengtsson are industrial designer Thomas E. Alken and illustrator, graphic designer Nygårds Maria Bengtsson. Both of them run their own design studios in Copenhagen and join their forces for larger projects. They have designed for Holmegaard and Georg Jensen and belong to the independent designers of RHG3.

Thomas E. Alken graduated from The Danish Design School in 1997 and established his studio Format Design in the same year. His aim is to create beautiful, functional and long-lasting products that are based on a strong concept. In 2005 Alken became the head of the board of The Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition “SE”. He has been a member of the Professional Advisory Committee of Danish Designers of mDD since 2007 and a member of the School Council at the Danish Design School since 2009.

Nygårds Maria Bengtsson was born in 1968 in Mora, Sweden and graduated from Konstfack, University of Art, Craft and Design, Stockholm in 1997. She has also studied in Thomas E. Alken’s alma mater and, like him, in the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. Her work includes books, layouts, logos, textile patterns, fashion illustrations and prints for glass and ceramics.
