Antoni Tàpies

Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012) was an internationally acclaimed painter, sculptor and art theorist, known as one of the greatest names of European abstract art and even referred to as the “last great artist of the 20th century”. Tàpies’ extensive body of work ranges from paintings and lithography to mixed-media works.

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Tàpies first turned to the visual arts after a serious illness that forced him to rest and recover for an extended period of time. He became more and more involved with drawing and painting, eventually abandoning his law studies altogether to pursue a career in arts.

Tàpies’ pictorial language developed and shifted over the years: in the 1940s, his works were characterized by a strong, distinctive presence and personality that already set him apart from other artists of the era. In the 1950s, he grew interested in the materic, leading to textured canvases and a wide selection of expressions and communications. In the ‘60s, his work began to exhibit more iconographic elements such as writing and footsteps. Tàpies was also interested in new technical methods, which lead him to, for example, incorporate everyday objects into his works.

Tàpies has exhibited in museums and galleries all around the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, among many other prestigious institutions. He also has is own museum in Barcelona, run by the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, founded in 1984.
