Eero Aarnio

Bzz-zz-zzz. The electrical pencil sharpener on professor and furniture designer Eero Aarnio’s (born 1932) desk buzzes every once in a while. One of Finland’s most highly esteemed designers, who is also widely recognised abroad, does his design work entirely without the help of a computer. "The only machine I use is this pencil sharpener!" he laughs and sharpens the blue pencil in a whizz. Aarnio lives and works in the village of Veikkola in Kirkkonummi, in a house he has designed himself. The well-lighted study offers fantastic views into three directions, because the walls are made of glass. The landscape is dominated by a lake, and right by the water there is a smoke sauna – also drawn by Aarnio.
